Beyond The Cart
Bulky Item Pick Up:
Twice a year, Recology offers a scheduled pickup service for items you don't need anymore and that are too large for the carts. In addition to 2 cubic yards of bagged or boxed solid waste, items accepted are:
Items NOT accepted are liquids, dirt, rock, concrete or asphalt, hazardous or infections waste, and materials that exceed 5 feet in length.
Once you've used up your 2 free annual collections, we will provide further services for an additional fee. Call us at (650) 595-3900 or e-mail us to schedule an appointment.
Property Managers: We recommend choosing a date for your entire building or complex that is convenient for residents ahead of time. Have them communicate to you which items they want picked up, and give us a call so our staff can determine the best service to fit your needs and a collection will be scheduled. OR, help reduce your carbon footprint even further and consider organizing a building-wide yard sale. Neighbors can get together to sell or exchange items with each other and the public. Yard sales are a great way to keep unwanted items out of the trash and give them a second life. They also offer a fun way for everyone to find terrific deals and for neighbors to meet each other.
Please consider donating to any number of local non-profits and community groups. This can reduce the waste stream and provide a second life for the items you are discarding. Please click here for a list of organizations.

Holiday Trees
Once you've removed all the tinsel, lights, decorations and stands from your holiday tree, you can leave the tree next to your green compost cart, and we will pick it up for you between December 26 and January 31.
Please make sure trees are 8 feet and under. If it's taller than 8 feet, cut the tree into lengths of 8 feet or less.
Property Managers: You can request a bin or drop box for leftover trees. Call us to schedule a time for a route supervisor to determine the best location to place the bin or drop box, or an area for a consolidation of loose trees. Once a location has been identified, that information will be saved and future visits won't be necessary.

Household Hazardous Waste, Electronic Waste and Medical Waste
Household Hazardous Waste, Electronic Waste and Medical Waste are rapidly growing problems that account for significant amounts of toxic waste in landfills. These are illegal to put into the trash or pour down a drain or gutter because they will contaminate the soil, drinking water and air. Items such as electronics, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, paints, pesticides, cleaning products and other chemicals are illegal to put in the trash.
To learn how to legally, safely and properly dispose of these and other items, visit our Household Hazardous Waste page.

Helpful Tips For Property Managers
Make it Convenient:
Recycling and composting should be just as convenient as taking out the garbage. Keep recycling and composting carts and bins located in the same area as the garbage so it is easy for residents to empty their buddy bags kitchen pails when they take out their garbage.
Place recycling containers in common areas such as the lobby, club house, mail room or laundry room. Be sure to always place a garbage can next to the recycling containers or residents will place garbage in the recycling.
Cardboard:
If your complex generates a lot of cardboard, call us about getting a bin for cardboard collection.
Spread the Word:
Provide information to your neighbors and residents on an ongoing basis about recycling and composting and keep them informed about any changes. Use multiple means of getting the message out: tenant meetings, e-letters and signage near the recycling bins and in common areas. Provide recycling information to all new residents when they move in.
